New Teamsters Members Sign Contract

On November 9, Penn dining workers, now Teamsters members, met to ratify their new contract! The contract came after several weeks of negotiating between Bon Appetit and Teamsters members, during which the new Teamsters drove a hard bargain. The new contract includes job security, a schedule for wage increases, more affordable healthcare, and new grievance procedures.

Penn Workers, Students Win Union Recognition

Today Penn SLAP is announcing a second victory in the Justice On the Menu Campaign. The rest of the non-unionized Penn dining workers won union recognition earlier this morning after a card check with Bon Appetit Management Company.

This victory comes after months of intensive organizing by workers and students without the help of any outside organizations. This victory shows that worker and student power is built through relationships, community-building, and a shared vision of a better future. When students and workers stand together, real power is built!

Kosher Worker Organizing Committee Unanimously Votes 'YES' on First Union Contract!

Hello campaign friends and allies,
We have some really exciting news and updates if you haven't already heard! The kosher dining staff at Penn just unanimously voted yes on their first union contract last Friday!!
It is a three year contract that offers higher wages, a pension plan, affordable healthcare, an end to dining staff at will employment, and paid sick and personal days among others.
SLAPistas and workers listened to Lance Geren, the Teamsters' labor lawyer, read out the new terms of the contract last Friday. There were cheers and tears of joy among workers who lined up to place their vote on the contract quickly after it was read.
The workers and the Teamsters put on a good fight, and now the kosher dining hall workers are officially part of the brotherhood and sisterhood of Teamsters Local 929.
Check out these articles on the contract vote and this photo from the union hall (awesome SLAP shirts, right?!?):

End of Semester Campaign Justice on the Menu Campaign Update

Below is the campaign update we just sent out to all of our supporters:
Dear Allies and Supporters of the Justice on the Menu campaign,

What an amazing and action-packed semester! We in Penn SLAP (Student Labor Action Project) wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support of Penn dining hall workers demanding change.

The mid-March launch of the Justice on the Menu campaign came as the culmination of almost a year and a half of relationship-building, strategizing, and preparation. In less than two months we:

  • held a massively successful rally where members of the Penn community came out to support the workers
  • collected over 1100 signatures on our petition
  • launched a campaign website
  • released our first campaign video
  • were featured almost weekly in the DP--two workers were even featured in separate articles on the front page (here and here)!
  • supported the Falk Dining Commons workers as they went through a successful unionization process with Teamsters Local 929!

In those few short weeks the workers we have come to know and trust - with great courage - stood up to their employer and demanded justice. Workers and students joined together and successfully took the first steps towards meaningful change.

With new changes coming to Kosher dining at Penn there is a tremendous amount of uncertainty as to what next year will bring. Justice on the Menu is by no means over. We fought hard and the workers successfully unionized under the Teamsters Local 929. Contract negotiations will begin in late May, and Penn SLAP will continue to support the workers’ efforts over the summer.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to you, our allies, for helping us win these incredible victories. The hard work is not yet over, and we look forward to continuing to put justice on the menu at Penn next year.

Love,
Your Friends at Penn SLAP

Shout out to SLAP on USAS front page!

Penn SLAP is featured on the front page of the USAS website! It features a picture of us from our victory barbecue and a write up by SLAPista Clara Hendrickson! Check it out here, http://usas.org/

Excerpt:
The workers at Penn’s Falk Dining Commons were officially recognized as union members of Teamsters Local 929. Bon Appetit employees Troy Harris and Kareem Wallace met with Bon Appetit Management Company to do a card check, ending the meeting early after the 9th name was read and a majority of worker unionization was determined.

Union contract negotiations will take place in the coming months. Workers and the Penn Student Labor Action Project at the University of Pennsylvania will continue to push for wages and a paid sick leave policy that match that of the contracted dining hall workers at Penn, along with other improvements in working conditions and benefits. “I’m excited, but more so pleased, that we’re finally getting on the right track,” said Rabia Abdul, a worker at Falk Dining Commons.

This economic justice campaign is the product of a unique partnership between students and dining hall workers who have come together to demand change on their campus and in their workplace.

“It has been so exciting to watch the campaign unfold with workers leading the efforts,” said Eliana Machefsky, a junior at Penn. “The workers have put everything on the line for the campaign and their commitment to seeing a victory is palpable.”

Now for the next step... holding the University accountable for a fair contract. We'll keep you posted.
